Giants: Truth or Myth? – News Articles about Giants published in the 1800’s and early 1900’s

Giants

giants-in-greek-mythologyGiant (Mythology)

Giant is the English word (coined 1297) commonly used for the monsters of human appearance but prodigious size and strength common in the mythology and legends of many different cultures. The word Giant was derived from one of the most famed examples: the gigantes (Greek: γίγαντες) of Greek mythology.

In various Indo-European mythologies, gigantic peoples are featured as primeval creatures associated with chaos and the wild nature, and they are frequently in conflict with the gods, be they Olympian, Celtic, Hindu or Norse. Giants also often play similar roles in the mythologies and folklore of other, non Indo-European peoples, such as in the Nartian traditions.

There are also accounts of giants in the Old Testament, most famously Goliath, Og King of Bashan, the Nephilim in Genesis 6:4 , the Anakim, and the giants of Egypt mentioned in 1 Chronicles 11:23. Attributed to them are extraordinary strength and physical proportions.

Human Gigantism

Gigantism, also known as giantism (from Greek γίγας gigas, “giant“, plural γίγαντες gigantes), is a condition characterized by excessive growth and height significantly above average. In humans, this condition is caused by over-production of growth hormone in childhood resulting in persons between 2.13 m (7 feet or 84 inches) and 2.74 m (9 feet or 108 inches) in height. Tallest man known to have lived

Robert Wadlow, is the tallest man known to have lived  2.72 metres (8 feet 11 inches)

Robert Pershing Wadlow
(February 22, 1918 – July 15, 1940) also known as the Alton Giant and the Giant of Illinois, is the tallest person in history for whom there is irrefutable evidence. The Alton and Illinois monikers reflect the fact that he was born and grew up in Alton, Illinois.
Wadlow reached 8 ft 11.1 in (2.72 m) in height and weighed 439 lb (199 kg) at his death at age 22. His great size and his continued growth in adulthood were due to hyperplasia of his pituitary gland, which results in an abnormally high level of human growth hormone. He showed no indication of an end to his growth even at the time of his death. (more at: AltonWeb)

Truth or Myth?

According the square-cube law it’s physically impossible that humanoids of the size represented by the claimed discoveries of these skeletons could ever have existed.

Below you will find a collection of articles about Giants, published in the 1800’s and early 1900’s.

Is there any credit to these claims or are the existence of Giants in history just a myth?
